General Course Information

Classes are 8 weeks long, held on Tuesday nights at the North Suburban YMCA from 6:30 pm to 9:30 pm. and on Sunday afternoons at the Lakeview YMCA. Half of each class is spent in the classroom. The other half of the class is spent in the pool.

In the classroom sessions, you will learn the academic aspects of diving. Topics include:

  • Dive equipment
  • Dive planning
  • Underwater and diving environment
  • Dive sciences and underwater physiology

In the pool sessions, you will learn the practical aspects of diving. Topics include:

  • Proper assembly, disassembly, and care of Scuba equipment
  • Proper diving techniques, including water entry and exits, normal and emergency procedures, buddy procedures and buoyancy.
  • Skin diving skills

After completion of the classroom and pool sessions, we have two half days of open water diving, including 5 total dives. We normally do our open water dives in Kankakee, IL, at Haigh Quarry.

Registration is handled online, in person or by phone through the North Suburban YMCA or the Lakeview YMCA.
